apex portal

Dell Technologies Cloud Console

Scope

Create a stand alone portal for initiation and management of APEX Cloud Services subscriptions for Dell Technologies. This included building an e-commerce funnel with configuration, review & approval, payment processes.

Stretch Goal

Senior leadership wanted the new portal to have a “new, fresh” look, which resulted in a partnership with the Design Systems team to build, test and implement a new design system to be piloted on the APEX console and eventually made available to all Dell Technologies online properties.

The Engagement

  • 6 months to soft launch (minimal functionality, no styling, internal only), 10 months to MVP

  • Design System 1.5 created as a bridge to the full refresh of 2.0

  • Requirements & functionality in flux throughout (requiring agility and ability to pivot)

  • Daily syncs with Product and Engineering to refine requirements & designs

  • Nimble testing via usertesting.com to identify Minimum Delightful Experience.

  • Script and storyboarding for Demo Video which premiered at Dell Technologies World.

Challenges

  • Generative Research: largely had to rely on internal users and SMEs.

  • Multiple changes in direction and approach throughout.

  • Multiple stakeholders

  • Coordination among numerous cross functional teams & supporting agencies.

Mitigation

  • Daily cross team communication, working sessions

  • Two track approach: Testing and Implementation. Testing done in 2 week sprints with a new concept tested each sprint.

  • Whiteboard and hand drawn sketches validated with engineers in the morning, transformed to wireframes in time for working sessions in the afternoon.

  • Multiple design sub-teams managed through regular team meetings and daily “office hours” sessions for feedback, review and knowledge share.

Outcome

A challenging but successful engagement that allowed Dell to enter the Cloud as a Service market quickly. As design lead I was heavily involved in every interaction. I lead most working sessions, contributed both high level and detailed designs, provided guidance and oversight to the junior designers and agency resources, and was the main face of Design to the project and program leadership.

Dell Technologies World Demo Video

The Business commissioned a Demo Video to accompany the APEX product launch at Dell Technologies world in Nov. 2020 (held virtually and off schedule due to Covid pandemic). The design team partnered with marketing and a third party agency to create the script and storyboards, using our console design assets throughout. I also made a scratch video to assist with timing and script edits.
